You may use academic coursework as part of your continuing education with CDR. All academic coursework must abide by the following guidelines to be accepted for credit:

All coursework must be dietetics-related (related to a Performance Indicator (PI) from your active Learning Plan).

Courses must be taken at a US regionally accredited college or university (including distance learning)

A course must be completed within your current five-year recertification cycle to receive CPE credit

All courses should be logged individually under Activity Type 100 with the name of the course as well as the name of the college/university attended. When logging coursework on your Step 2: Activity Log, please be sure to indicate the number of semester, trimester, or quarter credit hours that each class was worth. Academic coursework can be calculated as follows:

1 semester credit hour = 15 CPEUs, (for example 3 semester credits are logged for 45 CPEUs)

1 trimester credit hour = 14 CPEUs

1 quarter credit hour = 10 CPEUs

You will be required to present an official transcript to CDR in the event that you are audited, so do please retain a transcript for your documentation.

Notification of successful completion of the certification should be received by May 31 of the last year of the recertification cycle, so that you can record the certification on your Activity Log before you finish and submit your Activity Log on May 31 to CDR for review. However, if you receive notification of successful completion by June 30 of the last year of the recertification cycle, you can record the certification on your Activity Log and finish and submit our Activity Log no later than June 30 to CDR for review.

I presented at a conference. Can I get credit for this?

Unfortunately, since you would be considered the expert in this role, credit cannot be awarded. Any preparation for the presentation that meets PDP criteria and adheres to an existing PDP Activity Type can be claimed. Examples include Professional Reading (Activity Type 200) or Research (Activity Type 205)

I wrote/ published a paper/journal article. How can I log this?

Unfortunately, CDR does not award credit for authorship/publication. However, authors of articles published in scientific peer-reviewed journals or chapters in dietetics related textbooks can increase their Professional Reading (Activity Type 200) CPEU limit. Please click the add an activity button on your Activity Log and select Activity Type 200 from the dropdown box. An image of a book will appear in the right hand column under the 120 day rule information.
What is the difference between a Performance Indicator and an Activity Type?

A Performance Indicator is a 3-digit number you selected when you created your Learning Plan. Performance indicators point to enhanced competence resulting from meeting the objectives of completed CPE activities sought out in relation to goals set forth on your Learning Plan. Activity Types are 3-digit numbers that appear on the Activity Log that let CDR know what kind of activity you completed (i.e. lecture, workshop, self-study, etc.)

Is there a list of Performance Indicators that I can access?

Yes, a comprehensive list of Performance Indicators can be found here

I’m trying to log an activity but the Performance Indicator drop-down menu doesn’t appear. Why can’t I see the Performance Indicators?

The dropdown will not function if the date of completion of the activity occurred more than 120 days prior to your Learning Plan (Goals) submission. This is known as the 120 Day Rule. The PDP Process is built around the premise that activities pursued to enhance knowledge or increase competency in a subject area are sought out based on established goals. If a Learning Plan (goals) is not submitted prior to the completion of activities, practitioners have 120 days to submit a Learning Plan. A One-Time Waiver of the 120 Day Rule exists as a single-use workaround if a Learning Plan was not submitted in a timely fashion. If the activity is 120 compliant, try using the calendar feature/ icon in the activity log to indicate the date. Since this field is format specific, sometimes using the calendar icon is helpful.

Can I count ServSafe certification?

ServSafe training can be claimed for CPE credit once per five-year cycle when the training is ...

Live or on-demand with subsequent live Q&A/ interaction*

Dietetics-related (corresponds to one of the Performance Indicators on your Learning Plan)

Directed toward the education of professionals (as opposed to that of the lay public)

Is relevant to knowledge, skills, behavior, and attitudes of professional dietetics practice

In keeping with the characteristics of Continuing Professional Education as defined in the CDR’s PDP Guide

An RD/DTR can earn CPE credit for that program, even if that program does not have prior-approval from CDR. Simply log the program in your Activity Log under Activity Type 170 - Lecture/Seminar and claim 1 CPEU for every 1 contact hour spent during the activity. Please also retain for your documentation either a certificate of completion or an agenda/timing outline which accurately reflects the number of contact hours spent completing this activity.

*Please note that a few ServSafe self-studies (web-based 740) have been approved by CDR. Please see below:

ServSafe Allergen – National Restaurant Association – approved for 2 CPEUs under Activity Type 740 (expires 5/1/2022).

ServSafe Manager Online Course – National Restaurant Association – approved for 10 CPEUs under Activity Type 740 (expires 2/28/2022).

I took a AND journal article quiz online. Will this automatically add to my Activity Log, or do I need to add it myself?

Successful completion of the online quiz and successful prompting of the system to input the data in your log should result in the auto-population of the information. In the event that the quiz does not populate your log, you can either manually enter the information by clicking "Add Activity" in your log and entering the activity as Activity Type 720 (printed self-study) or click “transfer” next to the journal article on your completed quiz list.

Where can I find activities that will fulfill the ethics requirement?

Activities that pertain to ethics in the field of dietetics can be found in the following locations:

CDR Ethics Page

CPE Database

Another option would be to visit the websites of CDR's Accredited Providers

There is no one single activity that you must complete to satisfy this requirement, as long as a continuing education program's content is primarily about a matter of professional ethics and how it relates to your practice.

Do I need to complete 1 CPEU of ethics in my current cycle?

Can I get credit for volunteering?

Despite being a very worthwhile activity, CDR does not award credit for volunteer activities since you would be considered the expert in this role. You may, however, be able to claim formal training that you receive that would prepare you for an activity of this nature as long as the subject matter corresponds to Performance Indicators on your Learning Plan and the activity itself adheres to available CPE Activity Types.

What is the 120 Day Rule?

The 120 Day Rule pertains to the Learning Plan submission date.

Your Learning Plan should be submitted before you complete any CPE activities, but must be submitted no later than 120 days after completing your first CPE activity in your current recertification cycle. Once the Learning Plan is on file, there is no time limit for the entry of activities (other than the end of a practitioner's 5-year cycle).

CPE activities must relate to the performance indicators specified on your active Learning Plan. In the event that an activity does not fit your plan, you may update the plan — either before attending, or no more than 120 days after completing the activity.

To see if an activity is 120 day compliant, enter your Learning Plan submission date into the 120 Day Calculator
